To cook with a pie iron, simply place bread (or many other alternatives) with fillings between the plates, close it, and cook over heat source. It is used to make toasted sandwiches, pies, and really any recipe you can dream up, over an open fire, charcoals or even a stove. Best of all, they are an extremely fun way to cook for both kids and adults alike! wHAT IS A pIE iRONĪ pie iron is a cooking tool resembling a sandwich press, consisting of two hinged metal plates made of cast iron or aluminum at the end of long metal rods with wooden handles. Pie irons are one of my all-time favorite camping cooking tools that help me to create homemade meals for my family while camping. Thankfully, since that time I’ve learned that just about anything I would cook in my home kitchen can also be cooked in the great outdoors, over a campfire. As a kid, our camping meals were limited to roasting hot dogs and smores over the fire. There’s something magical about cooking food over a campfire. Whether you call them hobo pies, pudgy pies, mountain pies, campfire pies or something else entirely, you’re sure to find some amazing inspiration for pie iron recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even dessert for your next camping trip. If you’d like, the Doritos may be substituted for another beer.This collection of 35 pie iron recipes are the very best for making delicious, hand-held meals right over the campfire. I recommend serving this pizza with a side of beer and a fistful of Doritos. I don’t eat salad with my pizza when I’m at the Pizza Hut buffet and there’s a giant bowl of salad right next to the pizza, so there’s no way I’m eating salad with my pizza when I’m camping. (Like any freshly cooked pizza, especially one that’s been plunged directly into red hot coals, this thing has the potential to burn the shit out of your mouth, so be careful.) Serve with salad for a quick meal or it makes a great campfire snack! (There will be NO “camping salads” served with this pizza. For really hot coals this is plenty of time. You just want it to get warm and to melt the cheese. (Would they still be called “toppings” if they’re going inside something? Wouldn’t they be called “insidings”?) Wrap in heavy duty foil and place in coals. Add mozerella and pepperoni and any other toppings you wish. If I make this recipe, I may bring mushrooms.)Ĭut pita in half and spoon spaghetti sauce into pocket spreading evenly. Since vegetables of any kind are pretty much optional when camping, these are optional, too. Any other toppings as desired (This is where some diced onions, green peppers and other traditional pizza toppings might come in handy.Obviously the picture above isn’t a campfire pizza, it’s just an awesome looking regular pizza.) Come to think of it, Italian food in general is pretty much non-existent in the great outdoors. It’s also pizza which, in my opinion, is the perfect food and something you don’t often have on a camp out. I like this recipe because it’s simple and, to recap one of the key components of a good camping recipe, it eliminates the use of plates, bowls or eating utensils. It’s called “3 Minute Pizza,” which is a horrible name so I’ve officially changed it to “Campfire Pizza.” It’s essentially spaghetti sauce, mozzarella cheese and pepperoni inside a pita, which is then wrapped and foil and tossed in the coals for a few minutes. Today’s camping recipe combines our first two recipes - “cooking in coals” and “awesome stuff in a pouch” - into something that sounds pretty sweet.
